Washington, DC – On April 18, 2023 , Representative Lois Frankel (FL-22) issued the following statement on President Biden’s executive order that includes sweeping directives to expand access to quality, affordable child care and long-term care—while supporting care workers and family caregivers.
The White House has called this executive order the “most sweeping set of executive actions to improve care in history.”
“Our care crisis holds our economy back. Right now, too many families struggle to find affordable quality child care and long-term care for their loved ones and too many care workers can’t make ends meet,” said Rep. Frankel. “As we hail President Biden’s historic executive order that recognizes the importance of care and incorporates specific actions to effect positive change for families and workers across the country, we recognize that the work is far from done. House Democrats will continue our non-stop efforts to push for Congressional action to end the care crisis.”
The President’s executive order includes more than 50 directives to nearly every cabinet-level agency to expand access to affordable, high-quality care, and provide support for care workers and family caregivers. It directs federal agencies to identify which of their grant programs can support childcare and long-term care for people working on federal projects and consider requiring applicants seeking federal job-creating funds to expand access to care for their workers. It directs the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to consider actions to reduce or eliminate families’ co-payments for child care.
