Rolling Green Elementary School issued the following announcement on Oct. 27
Students in the Santaluces Community High School Cybersecurity Academy now have the opportunity to graduate college and career ready with at least six professional certifications, thanks to a $750,000 grant from the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation.
The academy is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to specialize in cybersecurity, by providing foundational knowledge and skills in computer and network security, security vulnerabilities, attack mechanisms and techniques, intrusion detection and prevention, risk identification, incidence response, access control, and recovery.
Not only will students explore careers in Cybersecurity and Internet Technologies (IT), they will also learn the importance of taking proactive steps to enhance cybersecurity at work and at home.
“I am excited about the opportunities this program will provide to our students. Skills obtained during the program will range from Information Technology (IT) to network security planning and analysis as well as possible internships in the field of study,” said Tameka Robinson, the principal at Santaluces High.
Though the program, students can earn industry certifications in Microsoft Office Bundle, Adobe Certified Associate Photoshop, Adobe Certified Associate Dreamweaver, Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) - Software Development Fundamentals, Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) - Security Fundamentals, and Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) - Networking Fundamentals.
“This career field is in high demand. Industry certifications earned through various Cybersecurity courses will afford students employment in this field and definitely set them apart from others,” Robinson said.
Specialized courses focus on database security, planning and analysis, software, and web security, skills needed to become an Information Security Analyst, a job which has a starting salary of $60,000 to $100,000 per year.
The three-year grant from the DeLuca Foundation provides funding for a curriculum, “that was unheard of 10 or 20 years ago,” said James Gavrilos, President and CEO of the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County, which helped secure the grant.
“More importantly, this grant will fund two positions, one at Santaluces and one at the District level to focus on bundling a pipeline of diversity so that female students and students of color will be encouraged to look at Cybersecurity as a career,” Gavrilos said.
Students interested in the Cybersecurity Academy can begin to apply when the Choice and Career Options application window opens on November 2. The application deadline is January 29, 2021. Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA and may be subject to a background check.
