The Florida Atlantic University women’s tennis team defeated No. 75 East Tennessee State by a score of 4-1 on March 19 at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center in Boca Raton, Florida.
This win brings the Owls’ season record to 5-7, while ETSU moves to 10-4. The match was highlighted by strong performances in both doubles and singles play.
Maria Alvarez said, “It was a great team win. I’m pleased with the way we set the tone from the very first point of doubles play. The intensity carried into singles, where the team showed great composure and toughness despite the challenging conditions. We competed at a high level, especially in the important moments. Now, it’s time to prepare for our next match against Harvard on Saturday.”
In doubles action, Malika Amirgaliyeva and Alexia Patru secured a quick victory on court two with a 6-1 win. Panna Bartha and Katrin Pavkova, ranked No. 64 nationally, clinched the doubles point for FAU with another 6-1 result on court one. The third doubles match was abandoned with FAU leading.
During singles play, Amirgaliyeva’s opponent retired due to medical reasons, giving FAU an early lead. Malwina Rowinska then won her match on court two in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). Although ETSU claimed victory on court five to avoid a shutout, Pavkova secured the overall win for FAU with a three-set triumph (6-1, 4-6, 6-2).
FAU will next host Harvard on Saturday, March 21 at 11 a.m., with matches free and open to the public at their home facility.
