The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team will host the UAB Blazers this Saturday at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena in Boca Raton, with tipoff set for 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and is part of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration.
Florida Atlantic enters the matchup with a 9-13 overall record and a 3-7 mark in American Athletic Conference play. The Owls are seeking their second consecutive home victory after a narrow win over South Florida but have recently dropped games to Tulsa and North Texas.
The team leads the conference in bench points per game (25.1) and is among the top five in several statistical categories, including fourth in three-point attempts (21.6) and steals per game (9.0), as well as fifth in three-pointers made per game (6.8). Vivian Onugha leads the Owls’ offense with an average of 9.1 points per game, followed by Grace Carstensen at 8.4 and Michiyah Simmons at 8.0 points per game.
Haley Walker leads the team in rebounding, averaging 6.4 boards per contest, while Onugha adds 6.2 rebounds per game. Jess Moors tops the assist chart for FAU with 2.8 assists per game and also ranks sixth in the conference for steals, averaging 1.9 per outing.
Madi Gewirtz has recorded a team-high 1.1 blocks per game, placing her fourth among conference players.
Former Owl Brittany Bowe, who played from 2006 to 2010, has qualified for her fourth Winter Olympic Games and will compete in speed skating events: the 1,000m, 1,500m, and Women’s Team Pursuit.
UAB comes into Saturday’s contest also holding a 9-13 record but sits at 2-8 within conference play after recent wins against Wichita State and UTSA. The Blazers feature five players averaging double figures in scoring this season: Cali Smallwood (14.6), Sofia Munoz (12.1), Molly Moffitt (11.5), Eleecia Carter (11), and Monae’ Duffy (10.5). Munoz and Journey Armstead share the lead for assists at four each per game; Duffy averages a team-best 8.2 rebounds; Moffitt leads with half a block per contest.
Historically, UAB holds a significant advantage over FAU with a series lead of 15-5; however, FAU won their most recent meeting earlier this season on January 10 by a score of 70-63 in Birmingham.
In their last outing against North Texas, Erin Rodgers led FAU with a career-high performance of 23 points along with four rebounds and one steal; Simmons added thirteen points plus three steals; Onugha grabbed eight rebounds.
After facing UAB on Saturday, Florida Atlantic will travel to Wichita State for another conference matchup scheduled for Tuesday evening.
