The Florida Atlantic University softball team ended the Beach Chicken Brawl tournament undefeated after winning both games on Sunday in Conway, South Carolina. The Owls defeated Binghamton 10-1 and shut out Saint Joseph’s 2-0 to close their last regular season tournament.
In the first game against Binghamton, Florida Atlantic (16-6) recorded its second consecutive run-rule victory over the Bearcats (1-11). The Owls scored seven runs in the second inning, highlighted by six doubles from five different players. Senior first baseman Yani Guzman bookended the scoring in that inning. Junior outfielder Karson Davey, sophomore Lily Holtje, senior third baseman Jesiana Mora, sophomore second baseman Destiny Johns, and senior catcher Chloe Yeatts each contributed a double during the frame.
Sophomore shortstop Hannah Rivers walked to start the third inning, followed by a hit from sophomore outfielder Bella Foran and another hit-by-pitch for redshirt junior outfielder Kylie Hammonds—her third of the day—to load the bases. Davey drove in Rivers with a sacrifice fly. Senior pitcher Jaden Martinez started for FAU and did not allow a baserunner until the fourth inning. The Owls added two more runs in the fifth before Binghamton managed a late run; FAU secured its sixth run-rule win this season.
In game two against Saint Joseph’s (6-8), both teams remained scoreless until Holtje doubled down the left field line in the fourth inning. Guzman then hit her first home run of the season—a two-run shot that provided all of FAU’s offense. Senior pitcher Autumn Courtney threw her second complete game in as many outings, allowing only two hits over six innings with four strikeouts.
Recent performances have seen Florida Atlantic win 11 of its last 13 games while outscoring opponents 85-14 during those victories. In nine recent wins, they have held opposing teams to one or fewer runs per game.
Hammonds set a program record for career hit-by-pitches with three more on Sunday, bringing her total to 20 at FAU. The six doubles in one inning against Binghamton marked a new single-inning high for this season. Holtje has now reached base safely in 14 straight games and leads her team with nine doubles so far this year. Martinez recorded a personal season-best with six strikeouts.
