Florida Atlantic University’s softball team lost to Florida Gulf Coast University on Tuesday evening in Fort Myers, with a final score of 3-2. The game ended on a walk-off single by FGCU.
The Owls held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior pitcher Autumn Courtney started for FAU and recorded four strikeouts early in the game. Both teams were held hitless through the first three innings.
Senior third baseman Jesiana Mora broke the deadlock with a double, followed by sophomore Lily Holtje who drove in Mora for the game’s first run. In the fourth inning, FGCU loaded the bases, but FAU’s defense managed a double play to prevent any runs from scoring.
FAU had an opportunity to extend their lead in the fifth inning after drawing three walks, but could not capitalize. The Eagles threatened again in their half of the fifth, but FAU maintained its advantage.
In the top of the seventh, senior Madison Inscoe hit her first home run as an Owl, increasing FAU’s lead to 2-0. However, FGCU responded with two hits and scored their first run on a fielder’s choice. A single up the middle then brought home two more runs for FGCU, ending the game.
Mora has now recorded at least one hit in ten out of eleven games this season. Holtje has reached base in nine games so far this year. Inscoe is now one of six different Owls players to have hit a home run this season. Courtney finished with six strikeouts.
FAU will next host the Joan Joyce Classic from February 19 to February 22, featuring Kansas, UMass, Southern Indiana and Villanova. Their opening game will be against Kansas on Thursday at 6 p.m., which can be streamed on FAUSports.com.
