Florida Atlantic Owls to face Charlotte in American Conference tournament opener

The Florida Atlantic Owls women’s basketball team will begin their postseason run against the Charlotte 49ers in the opening round of the American Conference Women’s Basketball Championship on March 10 at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern Time and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

This matchup is significant as both teams look to advance in the conference tournament after challenging regular seasons. Florida Atlantic enters with a record of 13-17 overall and 7-11 in conference play, while Charlotte holds a 14-16 overall record and an 8-10 mark within the league.

The Owls have shown strength off the bench, leading the conference with an average of 23.7 bench points per game. They also rank among the top five teams in several categories, including third in three-point attempts per game (21.2), fourth in steals per game (8.8) and three-pointers made per game (6.6), and fifth in turnovers forced per contest (16.8). Erin Rodgers leads Florida Atlantic’s offense with an average of 9.9 points per game, followed by Vivian Onugha, Grace Carstensen, and Destyne Jackson.

Jess Moors leads the team in assists (3.2 per game) and steals (1.8 per game), while Onugha tops rebounding efforts with 5.9 boards each contest. Haley Walker follows closely with an average of 5.5 rebounds, and Madi Gewirtz leads in blocks at nearly one per game.

Charlotte comes into the tournament leading the conference in offensive rebounds (17 per game) and ranking high in other rebounding statistics as well as turnover margin and fewest fouls committed. Princess Anderson is their top scorer at 15.7 points per contest, while Tanajah Hayes averages double figures and ranks second in assists across the conference.

Historically, Charlotte has dominated this matchup, holding a 16-5 advantage over Florida Atlantic all-time, including two wins at neutral sites. The Owls are aiming to break a five-game losing streak against Charlotte; their last victory came on March 3, 2024.

If Florida Atlantic wins Tuesday’s contest, they will advance to face North Texas on March 11 during the second round of tournament play.
