Florida Atlantic University’s men’s basketball team was eliminated from the American Conference Championship on March 13 after a 74-70 loss to North Texas in the second round.
The game marked the end of the season for the Owls, who finished with an 18-15 record. The matchup was notable for Florida Atlantic’s strong defensive effort, holding North Texas to under 40 percent shooting. Sophomore guard Isaiah Elohim led the Owls offensively with 20 points, but a late comeback attempt was not enough to secure a win.
Josiah Parker, named American Freshman of the Year, opened scoring for FAU and contributed nine points in the first half. The Owls’ defense limited North Texas to just 33 percent shooting in that period. However, free throws proved decisive as Florida Atlantic conceded 15 points at the line before halftime and trailed 34-30 at the break.
In the second half, FAU increased its trips to the free throw line, converting on 18 of their 24 attempts. Despite falling behind by ten points with eight minutes left, a quick run brought them within three points following key plays from Niccolo Moretti and Elohim. North Texas responded by rebuilding their lead, and although FAU scored three times in quick succession during the final minute, they could not close the gap.
Elohim’s performance included a career-high eight made free throws and marked his third game this season with more than twenty points—all against conference opponents. Amkou added thirteen points, while Moretti totaled twenty-eight points over two tournament games on efficient shooting. All nine players who saw action for FAU recorded multiple rebounds.
