Florida Atlantic University’s men’s basketball team lost a close game to North Texas, 73-72, on Sunday in Denton, Texas. The matchup marked the first meeting of the season between the two teams. The contest featured 12 ties and 23 lead changes over its duration.
The Owls started strong with sophomore guard Isaiah Elohim hitting a three-pointer on their opening possession. Redshirt junior guard Niccolo Moretti contributed five assists without committing a turnover in the first half. In the final minute and a half before halftime, Florida Atlantic went on a six-point run capped by Devin Williams’ fastbreak layup, giving them a 34-32 lead at intermission.
In the second half, FAU opened with consecutive layups from Williams and freshman Josiah Parker but North Texas responded with a seven-point run to retake the lead. Both teams traded baskets through much of the period. The Owls converted eight of their last nine field goals to take a three-point advantage late in the game.
With 25 seconds left, Yohann Sissoko scored on a layup following goaltending to put FAU ahead by two points. However, North Texas secured victory with two free throws as Florida Atlantic missed both of its final attempts.
Josiah Parker led FAU with 18 points and nine rebounds, continuing his recent form after averaging 17 points and nearly 11 rebounds over his previous six games. Redshirt freshman Amar Amkou made four three-pointers for a collegiate career high. Moretti recorded a personal best with nine assists while Williams registered three blocks for the 16th time this season. The Owls outshot North Texas from both the field and beyond the arc.
Florida Atlantic (15-13 overall; 7-8 conference) will return home for its final two regular-season games at Abessinio Court at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena: Thursday against Temple at 7 p.m., broadcast on ESPN2, followed by Sunday versus Charlotte at 2 p.m., airing on ESPN+.
