The Florida Atlantic University (FAU) beach volleyball team, ranked No. 15 nationally, concluded the Chanticleer Challenge in Conway, South Carolina with a split outcome on Saturday. The Owls were defeated by No. 4 Cal Poly with a score of 5-0 but rebounded to secure a 4-1 victory over Georgia State.
Following these results, FAU holds an overall record of 10-2 for the season. Cal Poly also improved to 10-2, while Georgia State dropped to 4-8.
The day’s opening match saw FAU facing Cal Poly for the first time in program history. The Owls were unable to claim a win in any pairing, losing all five courts.
Later in the day against Georgia State, Cameron Knifton and Allison Spittal gave FAU an early lead with a straight-set win on court five. Reese Edwards and Kendall Mignerey extended the advantage after prevailing in three sets at the No. 4 spot. Denisse Morgenstern and Shantel Starling clinched the dual for FAU with another straight-set victory on court two. Klaire VanDeusen and Mia Scanlon secured one more point for the Owls on court three before Georgia State managed its lone win of the match on court one.
With this result, FAU tied its all-time series against Georgia State at 12 wins apiece.
Individually, Knifton and Spittal now have a team-best pair record of 10-2 this season. VanDeusen and Scanlon stand at 7-2, while both Morgenstern/Starling and Mignerey/Edwards hold records of 5-6 each.
Next weekend, Florida Atlantic will host its Beach Invitational tournament in Pompano Beach on March 14 and 15.
