Florida Atlantic baseball lost to the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Apr. 2, with a final score of 7-2 at FAU Baseball Stadium.

The game was important for both teams as they continue their conference schedules. Florida Atlantic’s record now stands at 15-15 overall and 2-5 in the American Athletic Conference, while UAB improved to 20-10 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

UAB took an early lead with a two-run home run in the first inning and added another run in the second. Florida Atlantic responded with a run-scoring single by TJ Gramesty in the third inning but could not close the gap further. The Blazers extended their lead with another two-run homer in the fourth, making it difficult for Florida Atlantic to catch up.

Kyle Boylston contributed by drawing a walk, stealing two bases, and scoring on a groundout during the fourth inning. Despite loading the bases in the ninth inning, Florida Atlantic ended the game with a strikeout and could not complete a comeback attempt. Head Coach John McCormack said, “We dug ourselves a hole early, and we’ve had a few games in a row now of rough offensive outings. Their pitcher threw exceptionally. We had opportunities. We need to be able to push a few across and change the dynamic of the game.” UAB out-hit Florida Atlantic eight to five; Eli Small recorded two singles while Marshall Lipsey, Patrick Ward, and Gramesty each had one hit.

Pitcher James Litman started for Florida Atlantic but left after four innings having allowed five runs on five hits along with seven walks and two strikeouts. Kyzer Smith pitched during the fifth inning while Tyler Murphy finished out four innings allowing only one run on three hits.

The teams are scheduled to play again Friday night for game two of their series.
