Florida Atlantic baseball lost to Florida Gulf Coast University 12-4 in a non-conference matchup on March 17. The Owls now hold an overall record of 13-8 as they prepare to begin American Conference play this weekend.
The game started with FGCU taking an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning, including a three-run home run. Florida Atlantic responded in the bottom of the first with a solo home run by Kyle Boylston and an RBI single from Brett Patten, narrowing the gap to 4-2.
FGCU extended its lead with two-run home runs in both the third and fifth innings, making it 9-2. The Owls had an opportunity to close the deficit with bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning but were unable to capitalize after a foul out and two strikeouts ended their chance.
The Eagles added another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh before Florida Atlantic scored twice late for a final score of 12-4. John Martinez led the Owls offensively, finishing with three singles. Patten reached base five times through two singles, two walks, and being hit by a pitch. Boylston’s home run was his second of the season, while Michael Perazza recorded his team-leading third triple.
On the mound, seven pitchers appeared for Florida Atlantic. Patrick Ward stood out by pitching two perfect innings on just 21 pitches and recording his first collegiate strikeout.
Looking ahead, Florida Atlantic will host UTSA this weekend as they open their American Conference schedule. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 6:35 p.m.
